Five Things To Look For When Buying Golf Shoes

Over the years, buying golf shoes has always been one of the more frustrating golf retail experiences for me.

I'm quick to jump at the latest technology or style, only to be left disappointed.

Finding the right pair of golf shoes doesn't have to be as difficult as I make it for myself.

There really are only five things you need to consider.

Golf Shoes - Things to Consider

  1. Comfort
  2. Protection
  3. Warranty
  4. Price
  5. Style

Golf Shoe Comfort

By far, the most important thing to consider when buying golf shoes is how comfortable they are. Never, never, never buy golf shoes that are even remotely uncomfortable. If they pinch or rub even slightly in the store, how do you think they'll feel after 4-5 hours of walking in them?

If the salesperson tells you, "Oh, they'll just break in after awhile", they've never played any golf in an uncomfortable pair of shoes. Don't listen to them.

When buying golf shoes, make sure to bring a similar pair of socks like the ones you wear on the course. These socks will help make sure you buy exactly the right size.

With your golfing socks, try on both golf shoes (left and right) and walk around the store for awhile. If you feel even the slightest discomfort, either try a different size or shoe style. Remember, if the shoes are uncomfortable in the store, they'll absolutely kill your feet on the course.

Also, try making a few swings (with or without a club) while wearing the shoes. Some golf shoes feel really comfortable when walking but tend to pinch, bind or rub in the golf swing follow-through.

Water Protection

Regardless of whether you plan to play in the rain or not, you should seriously consider buying golf shoes that are waterproof. If you've ever drenched your feet by walking in early morning dew, you'll understand why waterproof shoes are a good idea.

Water repellent shoes used to be hot and stuffy. But materials have advanced to the point where you really can't tell that you're wearing waterproof spikes.

Keep in mind the difference between water resistant shoes and those that are waterproof.

Water resistant is a fancy way to say that your feet will likely get wet.

Waterproof shoes don't let any water in through material or shoe seam seepage.

Golf Shoe Warranty

You should always try and buy a pair of golf shoes that have a two year waterproof warranty. The workmanship of the shoe often comes with a warranty of one to two years.

If you find a pair of shoes that have a good warranty and they fit within your budget, consider buying two pairs. Rotating shoes every other day really helps extend the life of both sets of shoes. Also, if you need to send one pair back under warranty, you'll always have a spare.

Price

Price is obviously a key consideration when buying golf shoes. It's hard to define the "right" price for a pair of shoes - you're the best person to set your own budget. But here are a couple tips to help you stretch your golf shoe dollar.

If possible, buy your shoes during the off season. You'll be amazed at how much money you can save by doing so. Sure, you'll be buying last year's model but at 30-60% discount, who cares!

Some stores offer price match guarantees - even against internet prices. If you find a store that offers this guarantee, shop online for the best price and then take a page printout to the retail store. You can certainly save a few bucks this way.

Finally, don't be afraid to buy golf shoes at the larger sporting goods outlets. They often carry a great selection of golf shoes. And since they buy in greater volume, you can often find better deals.

Style

We all want to look good on the course. Most of us anyway! Make sure to buy a pair of golf shoes that appeal to you. Golf is all about confidence and concentration. If you keep thinking about how ugly your shoes are, it's a bit distracting - especially when putting!

Everyone's tastes are different so there's no way of telling you what the right style is. Simply go with what you like. Just keep in mind, never sacrifice style for comfort!
