Simple Golf Grip Tips

Learning and practicing a few basic golf grip tips is really important to your game. Unfortunately, most golfers never get the golf grip quite right. Since the golf grip is your "relationship" with the club, having a bad golf grip will lead to plenty of shot making arguments!

Learning the proper golf grip is really pretty basic. Once you learn the right way to hold the club, some discipline is required over the long term. You will need to periodically check your golf grip to make sure it hasn't slipped slightly out of whack

There are really only three types of golf grips. These are:

  • The Vardon, or overlapping golf grip. This grip is the most popular grip, especially among professionals.
  • The interlocking golf grip. This grip is essentially the same as the one above but the index finger of one hand interlocks with the pinkie finger of the other.
  • The 10 finger golf grip - also known as the baseball grip. This grip has traditionally been frowned upon by teaching professionals since it can limit control and consistency that you get with the previous two techniques. This grip is gaining popularity, however, especially with natural golfers.

The style of grip you use is really up to your own preference. Try them all and choose one that feels the most comfortable. Hit a few balls with each grip. Pay close attention to the "feel" you get on each shot.

Regardless of which grip you choose, the important thing to remember is that you are consistent every time you grip the club. A golf grip that changes, even slightly, over time can lead to a variety of issues with the consistency and accuracy of your golf shots.

Some golfers, over time, develop a strong golf grip. Others may suffer from a weak golf grip. These slight changes in hand positioning go unnoticed until shot errors start to appear. Proper golf grip tactics are important.

Ask any golf professional the first thing they look at when they are teaching a new student. They look at the golf grip. Many golfers who struggle with accuracy, power or consistency automatically think the problem is with their swing.

The professional knows better. More often than not, especially for higher handicappers, the road to improvement immediately begins with the proper golf grip.
