Step By Step Golf Swing Sequences
By studying proper golf swing sequences, golfers can break down the complex golf swing into more manageable, understandable steps.
It's much easier to practice and master the individual swing steps rather than trying to perfect the golf swing all at once.
The following nine golf swing sequences highlight the major actions, or motions, that make up the entire golf swing.
It's really important to understand what body movements and mechanics are involved with each step. It's also a good idea to study and comprehend how each sequence fits into the overall swing.
For each sequence pictured below, the corresponding captions highlight the important points to note for that particular swing step.
Left hand and right hand references are from the golfers vantage point.
The setup - where it all begins! We've zoomed in a bit on this shot - notice the positioning of the ball, hands, head and shoulders.
The one piece takeaway. The shoulders, arms and hands move as a single unit. The legs and hips aren't moving much yet.
The hips begin to rotate slightly and the wrists start the early cocking action. The legs are still pretty quiet.
As the club moves upwards through the swing, the entire body starts to coil. Notice how the left knee bends inward yet the right leg remains straight for stabilization.
The top of the swing. The club is parallel with the ground and the body is fully coiled. Note the position of the head - it stays over the top of the ball. The wrists are fully cocked.
As we start the downswing, the left arm helps pull the club. The hips have already started to rotate and clear out of the way.
At the moment of impact, the right hand starts the powerful wrist turn. Notice the bend in the right leg - the larger muscles help give us more power.
In the follow-through, the wrists make a nice, complete turn. At this position in the swing, the head must still remain over the ball. Don't look up yet!
A nice, high follow-through completes the golf swing sequence. The golfers weight is now on his left side.
A great way to analyze your swing sequences is to have a friend video tape your golf swing. You can then proceed, frame by frame through your entire swing. A large mirror in your house also makes it easy to study your own swing movements.
Before we wrap up, I'd like to call out a few key points to note regarding the start-to-finish golf sequence...
- Pay attention to the positioning of your head. While the head may turn slightly in the backswing (it has to make room for the shoulder), the crown of your head should stay over the ball well into the follow-through. If the head sways back and forth, it's very hard to make solid contact.
- Make a nice turn in your backswing. Swing around your body, not across it. At the top of your backswing your belt buckle should be facing almost opposite the target.
- Tempo is key. When studying golf swing sequences, remember one thing - all of the steps are part of the entire, fluid swing. Don't break up your swing into choppy segments in attempt to master a single step.
